Fontainhas Residences, Setúbal
A contemporary intervention that dialogues with history, restoring the essence of Setubal's architecture to Rua das Fontainhas.
The project stems from the imperative need to correct a visual disruption along Rua das Fontainhas. The existing building, marked by prolonged disuse, an aesthetic language foreign to local building traditions, and a smaller volume than its immediate neighbors, currently forms a clear break in the consolidated urban fabric.
The architectural strategy resolves this imbalance by surgically raising the building's height to match the street's average baseline. This scale adjustment caps exposed party walls and seamlessly "sews" the fractured urban grid, restoring physical continuity and a harmonious silhouette to the streetscape while ensuring operational viability.
On a formal level, the proposal carefully reinterprets the traditional Setúbal elevation by adopting the rhythm, metric, and proportions of neighboring historical vertical openings. The result is a genuinely contemporary architecture in its materials and detailing, yet deeply rooted in the scale, color palette, and collective memory of Setúbal.
